The history spotlight for August is the First Gulf War - Desert Storm and Persian Gulf.
We remember 23-year-old Lenore "Lenny" Torres, a Persian Gulf Veteran.
Revered by her family with the phrase, which is an adaptation of a famous line by the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson.
A gentle way to describe someone peacefully passing away.
"God's finger touched her, and she slept"
Note the engraving of the airplane, which denotes Lenny's service in the United States Air Force.
This monument is a testimony to her life and service to her country.

DESERT STORM & PERSIAN GULF CONFLICT / FIRST GULF WAR
The Gulf War was the first war played out on television with the whole world watching it unfold. Television coverage changed how the world perceived war, bringing the war into our living rooms.
Desert Storm and the Persian Gulf War are not separate wars, and the conflict is referred to as the First Gulf War, which began in 1990.
The First Gulf War, spanning from August 2, 1990, to February 28, 1991, was a major international conflict triggered by Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. A 35-nation coalition led by the United States liberated Kuwait after five weeks of aerial bombardment and a lightning-fast, 100-hour ground campaign.
President Saddam Hussein of Iraq ordered the invasion and occupation of neighboring Kuwait in early August 1990.
Arab powers such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt called on the United States and other Western nations to intervene.
Hussein defied United Nations Security Council demands to withdraw from Kuwait by mid-January 1991, and Operation Desert Storm began with a massive U.S. led air offensive.
After 42 days of relentless attacks, U.S. President George H. W. Bush declared a cease fire on February 28; by that time, most Iraqi forces in Kuwait had either surrendered or fled.
299 U.S. troops lost their lives. This included 149 battle-related deaths (killed in action) and 150 non-battle deaths, with 467 additional U.S. service members wounded.
Saddam Hussein was convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by an Iraqi court. Saddam asked to be executed by firing squad. The court denied the request, and Saddam was executed by hanging on December 30, 2006.

Our goal for 2026 is to place a wreath at the final resting place of each of the 4,000 veterans on Roselawn's sacred grounds.
